A Field Study On Well-Being of Dual-Career Academics in The Workplace and at Home

Abstract:

This research was conducted for academicians' attitudes towards being dual-career and determining whether the wellbeing of the workplace and the home differed with the demographic characteristics. At the same time determining the correlation between wellbeing at workplace and home was the other aim of study. Carried out on the dual-career academics at Süleyman Demirel University in Isparta, this study was performed by providing the participation of some 244 couples selected with the snowball method. The data were collected by employing the face-to-face questionnaire method. In the questionnaire, it was intended to analyze data with varied statistical method about the demographic information on the academic couples, the attitudes of the couples towards being dual-career, their attitudes towards the number of children and towards having children, and the evaluation of well-being in the workplace and at home. According to the findings obtained, it was seen that those with more than one child were happier in their workplaces, that a negative attitude towards being dual-career was not relevant to the number of children, and that having children had no significant effect on the academic career. There are significant, positive, and strong correlations among well-being at home, well-being in the workplace, and job satisfaction. The academic couples with negative attitudes towards being dual-career are unhappier in the workplace and at home. In addition, another finding revealed is that the female academics among the academic couples were more successful in terms of works produced than the males
