A short story of the national park movement in Turkey: the case of Yozgat ?aml??? National park

Abstract:

National parks are always prominent in areas that need to be protected in various parts of the world and planned to be transferred to future generations. The idea of a national park in Turkey, especially after the 1950s have found application, and areas of different properties also are included. The first legal protection is given to Yozgat ?aml?k and aims to ensure the conservation, sustainable use and recreation opportunities in its immediate surroundings. In this sense, it is considered as the starting point of the national park movement in Turkey. So, Yozgat ?aml??? National Park, which is a living memory with its historical, social and cultural identity, an original location in terms of understanding the story of the national parks movement in Turkey. Therefore, it was aimed to determine how the Yozgat ?aml??? came into the process of being declared as a national park, the traditional relationship established with the decision of national park, and the changes in the lifestyles of the people living around the national park. The reports and records pertaining to the process of Yozgat ?aml??? becoming a national park, examination and feasibility reports prepared in certain periods for national parks and the Long Term Development Plan prepared in 2011 (LTDP) were examined in this perspective. In the study, local newspapers were scanned in the periodicals of the city of Yozgat in order to obtain information on the earlier periods of the national park and to present the development process of the national park in detail. The findings indicate that Yozgat ?aml??? was considered for conservation status with a view on the projected development of the city at a time when the concept of national parks was in its infancy in Turkey. In order to transfer Yozgat ?aml??? to future generations, public opinion was generated by the politicians of the period and the grove was declared a national park. Thus, this area, which occupies an important place in the daily life of the people of Yozgat, has been re-produced in different periods as a political ecological by gaining a different dimension with the coming of official status and in this process the political, social, environmental and mental position and function of the national park has always been the subject of discussion
