THE TARADUF (SYNONYMY) PHENOMENON IN ARABIC LANGUAGE

Abstract As a linguistic phenomenon, taraduf (synonymy) has effectively sustained its existence in the Arabic language. Synonyms have an important place in Arabic as in many other languages. There is a significant number of synonyms in Arabic. Taraduf has been a matter of debate among Arabic linguists. The current article tries to explain the lexical and technical meanings of taraduf, reasons for its emergence, opinions of linguists on this subject, benefits of taraduf, works compiled on the subject, and discussions about the existence of taraduf in the Quran
