AN EXAMINATION OF RICHARD STRAUSS’ - DON QUIXOTE “PHANTASTISCHE VARIATIONEN üBER EIN THEMA RITTERLICHEN CHARAKTERS” AND THE SOLO VIOLA PART FROM THE ANGLE OF A PERFORMER

Expanding the boundaries of program music by improving the concept of reality Richard Strauss the master of the Tone Poem composed "Don Quixote Phantastische Variationen über ein Thema Ritterlichen Charakters” in 1897 is the only piece among his symphonic poems that used in the form “variations”. The protagonist in the novel Don Quixote is depicted by the solo cello, and his aide Sancho Panza is by the solo viola mostly. In this article, in general, the entire work and particularly the solo viola part are examined. As a result of the examination it appears that Sancho Panza is not only a secondary character but also converting as a main character of the story, especially in terms of its influence through the finale. Therefore, it was tried to be explained with the examination of the solo viola part as an option that the players portraying Sancho Panza should approach this viewpoint and reflect it in their interpretations
