CUSTOMS DUTY DISCOUNT DECISION FOR IRON AND STEEL IMPORTS AND AN EVALUATION ABOUT ITS INDUSTRIAL IMPACTS

Iron and steel industry has a strategic significance in terms of its contributions into the real economy for the world economies. During the establishment of European Union (EU), forming of European Coal and Steel Community for iron and steel industry is an apparent example for that. The protective measures of the USA, as being another important actor of the industry, have been creating intense debate globally. On the other hand, as a response of steel exports from China those encouraged by the Chinese government, taking precautions of the EU for steel imports from the region is remarkable. Varying publications in this field have been pointing out the importance of government incentives for development of Japanese and South Korean steel industries. In connection with the subject, as a result of the Turkish Ministerial Board decision on December 2017 about importing regime, tariff reduction has been come into force based on specified country group classification. The impacts of the decision on iron and steel industry of Turkey over medium and long term are tried to emphasize through this study. As a summary, unfavorable results are foreseen for the industry
