Retrospective Evaluation of Candida Species Isolated From Urine in a University Hospital

Urinary system infections are mostly caused by bacteria. Gram negatives, especially Escherichia coli species, are isolated among the bacteria. Fungal infections following bacterial infections are also frequently infections caused by the genus belonging to the genus Candida. In our study, the distribution of Candida genus were determined which were isolated from urine specimens in the Yeditepe University Hospital Microbiology Laboratory for a period of ten years (2006-2016). Germ tube test was done for the identification of C. albicans, and for species of Non-albicans Candida species were determined using API ID32C and Vitec 2.0 (Biomerieux, France) devices. 249 Candida species were observed in total. The most isolated species was C. albicans (54.2%). This was followed by C. tropicalis (14.1%), C. glabrata (12.4%) and C. parapsilosis (4.4%). Candida species are not common, but an increase is observed in recent years.
