FACADE FORMATIONS IN A？AK？Y TRADITIONAL HOUSINGS

In this study, 11 housings in Bart？n province, Ulus district, A？ak？y village, Merkez neighborhood are examined with frontal characteristics and it is determined that the construction materials of the housings are wood brick and stone. As construction, practice mostly mixed system is used. These features of the houses reflect the region’s characteristics and balconies are the determinative constructional component of the frontal typology. Along the fa？ade, the housings which different designs were tried on central axle, side axle and L shape attract attention with decorative details on frontages too. Unusual balcony types, wide and shutter basement windows, decoration details on cantilever and balcony posts, tendency to attached buildings are proofs of moving away from rural housing characteristics, and demonstrate us an extroverted social life and urbanization tendency. From past to present, A？ak？y Merkez neighborhood has been a stopover between surrounding villages and the center, so, besides agricultural activities, trade has also been one of the main economic activities, and this situation has redounded on facade designs too. While these housings dating the first half of 20th century are traditional in terms of construction materials and techniques, they also reflect the social transition of rural people who build their own housings within the bounds of necessity and possibility over the vernacular architecture
