THE NOVELTY OF BIOGRAPHY TERMINOLOGY IN THE LIGHT OF SALIM’S BIOGRAPHY

Divan Literature which produced works in several fields from late 13th century to the second half of 19th century went through a peak period in 16th century when it was enlivened by many poets besides reaching maturity in terms of richness in form, content and harmony. To leave his individual mark, while still following the tradition each poet somehow differed in terms of articulation, tone, imagination, poetic theme and vocabulary. The different trends in these aspects brought novelty to these poets. Poet biographies which are literary, social, political, economic and cultural documents of the time are the basic sources which we can rely on in shedding light on these aspects of the poets. In this paper, we attempt to specify the terms and phrases which define novelty in Salim Efendi’s “Biography of Poets”, and to reach a conclusion based on the considerations about the criteria of novelty
