Benefits and Losses: Turkey-NATO Relations In Between Exit or Not To Exit

Founded with military concerns at the beginning of Cold War, NATO became a multi-dimensional international structure, leaving behind its solely military dimension. In this new multi-dimensional concept of NATO, Turkeys’ place is so important that it is irreplaceable with another country. The vision and mission of NATO became argumentative after the dissolution of Soviet Union. Thus NATO has undergone a big transformation between 1990’s and today. The aim of this study is to make the new position of Turkey within this transformation process arguable. The study covers the mutual benefits provided by both parts to each other as well as the harms to Turkey caused by NATO since the beginning of membership of Turkey. On the other hand, in the greatness of the contribution of Turkey to defense of Europe is specially emphasized. NATO established by USA in 1949 as a military alliance against Soviet Union today has become a wide political platform. The basic question of this research is thus how the efficiency of Turkey within NATO will be improved and/or should Turkey exit or not exit the organization
