Evaluation of antibiotic susceptibilities and clinical characteristics of Burkholderia cepacia isolates

Background: Burkholderia cepacia causes opportunistic infections in intensive care patients and in immunosuppressed people at increasing rates. The fact that this bacterium is intrinsically resistant to many antibiotics and the high probability of infection in the hospital environment increases the importance of early diagnosis and treatment. In the study, it was aimed to determine the resistance rates of B.cepacia strains isolated from various clinics in our hospital to various antibiotics. Materials and Methods: Antimicrobial susceptibilities of 50 B. cepacia isolates isolated from various clinical specimens between January 2015 and February 2017 were retrospectively analyzed. all samples were sheep bloody agar, eosin methylene blue agar, chocolate agar cultivation. Identification and antibiotic susceptibility test were performed with the VITEK 2 automated system. Results: 43 of the patients were in intensive care units. The age range of patients varied between 0-85. The most effective antibiotics on the isolated strains were meropenem and ceftazidime. Discussion and Conclusion: For the control of B. cepacia complex infections, rational and appropriate antibiotic policies should be developed, isolation measures should be taken when colonized or infected patients are needed
