Abstract:

Cinema, that appears in early 19th century preserves its popularity as a politic vehicle in every age with technological developments from its first days to today, in the context of narratives, representations and its potential about power of transformation. On the other hand, “earth” has become to be the subject of many disciplines, from myths to religion, from folk tales to art, from law to sociology, by relating to existence, life, after and before; and it remains the subject of many disciplines, too. The most prominent fantastic horror figures of "horror films", preserving their day-to-day popularity and still appearing in different productions on both white screen and other mass communication tools, are undoubtedly vampires, zombies, Frankenstein’s creatures who appears as results of scientists’ experiments on dead people. In this study, fantastic horror characters in horror films of Western origin but globally popular have been handled from the early years of cinema to today. These characters’ position which are actually dead but stuck between life and death as being “evil that earth does not accept” is examined in the meaning of representation. Meanings attributed to cinematic codes in horror films are evaluated in relation with “earth accepts/ does not accept”
