Abstract:

Science education focuses on traning individuals, who investigate, question, and utilize scientific methods during problem solving. It could only be achieved by arrangment of proper learning process, and usage of suitable teaching methods, techniques, and tools. Textbooks are among most critical teaching tools at school. Quality of content, the language, visuals, and the activities withintext books effect learning. This study contains activities in science books, which were prepared according to the revised curriculum in 2013. The aim of the study is to determine if activities within secondary school science textbooks are in line with the strategy of 2013 science lesson curriculum, in which the basic approach is inqury based learning. This was a descriptive study and document analysis was used.. In that sense, a total of 5 books distributed in Marmara region for 5th, 6th, and 7th grades are studied. An activity evaluation table was constructed in order to study activities in these books, and activities were evaluated through descriptive analysis. According to study results, activities in textbooks are mainly found ineffective in terms of supporting inqury based learning, and the amount of ineffectiveness increases each year from 5th grade onwards
