Review on the Social, Collective and National Identity Areas of Third Generation Turkish Young Adults Living in Germany

Abstract:

It is stated that the largest portion of immigrant origin living in Germany consists of people of Turkish origin. It is mentioned that Germany has a population of 82.4 million in 2016. Of these, 18.6 million are of immigrant origin. Migrants from Turkey are 2.8 million. These constitute 3.4 percent of the general population. Turkish people living in Germany, while maintaining their religious, national and ethnic identities on the one hand, form collective identities on the other. Immigrants who want to adapt to Germany among the Turkish people living in Germany aim to develop a collective identity in order to adapt more easily. Turkish people who live in Germany or come to Turkey as workers shows much difference in terms of culture, value and religion compared to the individuals who live in Turkey. This is because they are immigrants. As a result of the study, it is seen that there is a significant difference between the gender variable and the scale total score and the collective sub-dimension. Nevertheless, when the question "What are the problems of citizens of Turkish origin living in Germany?" is asked, the answers related exclusion, discrimination and cultural differences are collected. When the most suitable nationality is asked to the participants, all participants answered as “I am Turkish.” Nonetheless, it is seen that the participants with German citizenship, Turkish citizenship and Turkish and German citizenship are involved.
