Abstract:

The relationship between opaque and transparent areas in building envelope design is significant. While the building facade contributes to the formation of the street identity perceptually and physically, it has to provide optimum visual, auditory, thermal and other comfort conditions to interior spaces. Transparent surfaces of facade have different functions for indoor and outdoor users. The need of reducing artificial lighting in accordance with sustainable building construction and meeting visual requirements by providing sufficient daylight for indoor environment, are among these functions. Accordingly, it is important in the building envelope to determine the proportional relations in between its opaque-transparent surface areas in accordance with physical environment data. In this research, in order to determine the proportional relation of opaque-transparent areas of building envelope, City of Istanbul is selected as the case study location, because it has one of the highest new building production rate within the context of urban renewal process in Turkey. Through a simulation software, the City of Istanbul is investigated with regard to transparency ratio by using the available data of its north-south quarters, and also its spaces having different width and depths are tested. With the results derived from this study, it is aimed to provide a guidance for designers in using the data of daylight correctly in the context of energy efficient design
