Analysis on social and cultural life in Antiokheia in the Seleukos Period

Abstract:

Antiokheia (Antioch) was made capital city by Macedonian Seleucid Empire which annexed most of the Near East lands in 300 BC and reconstruction activity started by Seleucid kings to make it prosper like any capital city. Since the reconstruction activities beared the traces of Macedonian and Greek overtones, it caused a great disintegration aspect of local fabric of the area and this disintegration was not limited to reconstruction activities and it is accepted that it affected all social areas over time. Seleucids largely relied on the immigrant Macedonian and Greek population in Antiokheia and in its vicinity to dominate the rich local culture. In this new social stratification that they build to achieve aforementioned aim, was shaped by giving local man the positions in lover or medium level administrative authorization. By the revolts in Antiokheia against the attempts of changing the belief system that existed before and during the the Seleucid Era, it is observed that the dominant factions in the city showed resistance to keep their own culture. In this study, analysis of the Seleucid Kingdom' decision to make Antiokheia the capital, efforts of making it a magnificent royal center which reflects their own Greek culture, the effect of this on the already existed cultural background that belongs to the solid local factions and on social life of these factions who brought the local culture into existence are aimed
