Abstract:

Due to a workshop on the history of Niksar, during the visit we carried out in 2012 a green glazed brick tombstone in Melik Dani?mend Gazi Tomb has been taken our attention. The tombstone is important in that it is made from terracotta, unprecedented, and that it is confronted as the only example identified from this material (according to existing literature review). The purpose of this study is to introduce the technical, form and ornamentation characteristics of the tombstone to the literature. The upper part of the rectangular form is arranged with six round slices and the middle slice is estimated to have ended in a slight pointed manner. On the surface of the brick, which is understood to be the green glaze from the remaining traces, there are freestanding ornaments with mold printing technique. There is no inscription and no date on the tombstone. It is difficult to tell a definite thing about the date of the tombstone, for which we can not identify the comparison material from its type. However, it may be possible that we compare the examples with similar features as the form features, albeit the materials are different. Especially when we look at other tombstones in the regions of Niksar, Tokat and Sivas, it is possible to find similar forms, generally dated to the XIV. and XV. centuries. Given the similarity of the use of sliced forms and rosettes on stone tombstones, it can be argued that the glazed brick tombstone can be dated to the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries
