ECONOMIC PATTERNS IN RURAL PARTS OF THE OTTOMAN STATE AND FOLD OWNERS IN TRABZON (1722)

This research is inspired by an “a？nam register” dated 1722, which shows the number of sheeps and sheep owners in the Trabzon province. The research investigates the agriculture and stock raising culture in Anatolia within the Ottoman context in general terms, partly considering the state-peasant relations and forms of wealth acquisiton. Besides, this research focuses on the importance of sheep and goat breeding and deals with the issue on the basis of both family economy and business connections to acquire wealth along with its economic and political aspects. The issue of cattle ledger also enables us to view the history of some wealthy and highly regarded families, whose influence and potency have long been felt until today, as well as revealing the extent and significance of sheep and goat breeding in the area
