Performance Evaluation in Irrigation Systems

In order to improve soil and water resources, irrigation projects have been prepared throughout the history of mankind. The aim of these projects is to increase agricultural production which is a strategic structure in every period, to ensure food security of the country, to increase the income of the population living in agriculture and to increase the level of welfare. The increasing world population in one hand and the negative consequences of climate change in recent years on the other hand increase the demand for water and make water an even more start-up tool. Agriculture is an important sector for our country. In addition to ensuring food safety of the population of more than eighty million, agriculture meets 17.7% of total employment, supplies raw materials to the industrial sector and contributes significantly to the development of rural areas. Agriculture, which has shown significant developments with irrigation projects realized for many years, plays an important role in the development of other sectors related to agriculture and makes a significant contribution to the economic development. In spite of all of these positive aspects, successful watering can be achieved by planning, operating, monitoring and evaluating the results of irrigation systems. Especially in developing and underdeveloped countries, the most profitable use of scarce resources is a great responsibility for the institutions and persons working in this field. Monitoring and evaluating the performance of irrigation systems can lead to positive steps towards improvements in existing projects, and will contribute to better preparation of new projects. Performance evaluation in an irrigation system is a systematic monitoring, recording and evaluation of the system in order to ensure that the introduction of resources, the operating program, targeted outputs and necessary activities are developed as planned. In this study, by gathering the important indicators used in the evaluation of the performance of irrigation plants in our country and in the world; to create a collective resource for employees and academic studies.
