A PHASE OF HISTORY OF THE EASTERN BLACK SEA IN THE 14TH CENTURY: WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT THE RELATIONSHIP AMONG HACIEM?RO?ULLARI, G?RESUN AND KU?DO?AN BEY?Keywords: ?epni,Hac?emiro?lular?,Ku?do?an Bey,Komnenoslar,II. Alexios Abstract: It is known that in the beginning of the 14th century, the Turcoman tribes involving in intense activities had arrived at the coastline of Giresun region and formed military settlements. This article is both about the detection of the name of raiding Turcoman Bey, Ku?do?an in Giresun and about what kind of information we have reached on his activities in this region. Historian Panaretos of Komnenos Dynasty of Trebizond wrote the name of this Turcoman bey with Greek alphabet and this formed an important issue upon the pronunciation of his name. This paper first argues that, the name should be read as Ku?do?an, then the discussions and arguments will be evaluated. It is argued that Ku?do?an Bey was a founder of a beylik: this kind of “synthetic” information will be combed out and what can be stressed about his authentic identity and deeds will be stated. The achievements of the article can be collected under those headings: Ku?do?an Bey was at the head of ?epni groups not long before the emergence of Hac?emiro?ullar? and Taceddino?ullar? therefore there is not any information about his relationship with these two groups; there are not certain evidence to relate him with the ancestors of Hec?emiro?ullar?; we can detect his region of influence by researching the villages named Ku?do?an in the region between Canik and Giresun Aksu valley; the Ku?luhan castle in vicinity of today’s Dereli in Aksu Valley may have been used as a bastion by Ku?do?an Bey; that he made a military region/a boundary to organize the raids towards Giresun; and that he was the military leader of the first Turkish conquerors of Giresun region
