The Turkish-French Treaty Dated June 23, 1939 in the French Archival Documents

Abstract:

Turkey and France signed a treaty on June 23, 1939 in Paris, with the Turkish-French Declaration by Ambassador Suat Davaz and Foreign Minister Georges Bonnet, and with the Foreign Minister ?ükrü Saraco?lu and Ambassador René Massigli in Ankara, leaving Hatay to Turkey . With this treaty, the territorial problem between Turkey and Syria was definitely resolved and the two countries’ borders were determined. France agreed that Hatay would join Turkey, and the French forces in Hatay agreed to vacate the country within a month. Hatay Parliament also decided to join Turkey on June 29 unanimously. After three years of struggle; the process, which was completed with the establishment of the Hatay State and the province of Hatay in Turkey was part of the international agenda for a long time. World’s major press organs were also interested in Hatay. The Turkish-French Treaty of 1939 has been evaluated in various writings in the French press, which has followed the case since the beginning. This study will examine the developments in the French diplomatic archive documents, the progress of the signing of the June 23, 1939 treaties and the reflections on the French press
