Research on Fragments of Archaic Period Structure and Monument Found at Asty of Klazomenai and SanctuariesKeywords: Klazomenai, Arkaik D?nem, altar, tap?nak, kutsal alan, yerle?im dokusu. Abstract: Klazomenai, one of the 12 Ionian cities is located in ?skele District, Urla – ?zmir. Ongoing excavations have not yielded any Archaic Period religious architectural remains since 1979. On the other hand, nine fragments belonging to monumental architecture have been found at different locations of the asty. The fragments prove temples, altars or monuments and also sanctuaries, which belong to these monuments in the Archaic Period.Architectural fragments demonstrate the presence of at least four structures and one votive column dated throughout the beginning of the 6th c. BC to the end of it, particularly last quarter of the 6th c. BC. The components of the settlement pattern of the Archaic Period asty, except the sanctuaries, is well known. When find spots and conditions of fragments found at asty are evaluated with the settlement pattern, at least three sanctuaries should have been placed in the Archaic Period asty. Moreover, the open air sanctuary on the Karantina Island dated to the Hellenistic Period and the possible Athena sanctuary could also be used in the Archaic Period. Furthermore, the cult place at Ta? Harman? district, located in west of the Arcropolis Hill, shows that at least six sanctuaries were used at the Archaic Period asty for different religious purposes and rituals. The fragments show the characteristics of Ionic and Aeolic architectures. The frieze with leaf decoration dated to the early 6th c. BC and Aeolic capital fragment dated to approximately middle of the 6th c. BC have Aeolic architecture features, while most of the fragments dated to the last quarter of the 6th c. BC have Ionic architectural features. The fragments found in Klazomenai, are also important for West Anatolia and for the Greece mainland religious monumental architecture. The fragments which are similar with those of Klazomenai are found in the Heraion of Samos, in Miletos, in Apollon Temple of Didyma and in the Delphi treasure houses as well. In this respect, the fragments shall contribute to the Archaic Period monumental architecture literature
