Abstract:

Objective: Beginning to work at early ages and working without security being common may lead to regression both physically and mentally and this may increase exposition to accidents. This study has been carried out with the intention of determining socio-demographic features of students attending Vocational Training Centre (VTC), their working conditions, frequency of having occupational accidents and factors influencing them. Material and Method: Sampling was not conducted in the study so as to include all the students in the study; however, only 1518 (86.9%) students out of 1746 were assessed. A questionnaire containing 41 questions was expected to be filled in by the students under the supervision of researchers. Results; Of the students, 82,2% were male and the mean age was 17.9±3.1. The mean age of beginning to work was 14.9±1.9 years, daily working duration was 11.1±1.8 hours, and 59.3% were apprentices. The frequency of occupational accident was 18.9%. The frequency of occupational accidents was more in the realm of machinery areas, metal and wood technologies than others. The most frequent types of accidents are the ones caused by machinery, falling down and accident due to a sharp piercing device. The most of injuries occurred at hands, arms and fingers. Conclusion; The mean age of beginning to work is low. The rate of occupational accident is higher in boys than girls. In such fields, machinery, metal and wood works where generally boys have been employed the most frequent occupational accidents have happened
