STREET TOPONYMY AS URBAN IDENTITY COMPONENTS IN IZMIR AND CONTRIBUTIONS TO SOCIAL STRUCTURE FORMATION OF ETHNIC CULTURE

The streets, boulevards and streets are the most significant parts and memory spaces of urban identity. This work, which is based on the belief that past experiences have been alive with names and placed in collective memory through the production of symbols, the names of the streets that have been in cities since the Republican era and which can be expressed as urban toponymy (hodonymy) are being studied in ？zmir city scale and a typology is being developed. The streets, streets and boulevard names in different districts of ？zmir are studied by sampling method. The differences in the direction of growth of the city, its family ties, cultural proximity, political reasons and land use are also important factors affecting street, street, boulevard and district names in ？zmir. The street names that are the subject of the study were obtained from city plans. Literature research and local government statistical documents were used. As a result of the evaluations, it is seen that in the past, names bearing ethnic traces and nationalistic traces did not constitute a stable political system in ？zmir city
