‘‘Razia Sultan, Queen of The Times’’: The Only Female Sultan of Muslim-Turkish State

Abstract:

Razia Begum Sultan is the only female ruler of Delhi Turkish Sultanate which was the first Muslim-Turkish state to reign in 13th century in India. Despite of her 12 brothers, she is a brave character having military genius, who succeeded to ascend the throne when she was just 16 years old. She is one of the rare persons who dared to stand at downstage as an administrator/ruler quite contrary to the fact that some muslim women in Middle Age made their political powers felt from backstage. Here with her this aspect, Razia Begum is a Turkish woman whom should be known not only in Turkish history but also in the world history. Although various studies on Razia Begum were carried out in our country, Razia Sultan could not find the place where she deserved. This study in which we addressed Razia Begum bibliographically was carried out benefitting from current sources and it imagined the Turkish women’s position in history. Purpose in this study is to point out the Turkish women’s importance by examining contribution of Razia Begum to Turkish history
