The View of Eyüp Sabri Hay？rl？o？lu on the Translation of the Quran

The Qur'an, as the last divine book, has been revealed in Arabic. However, its message didn’t only call Arabs but called all the people. Therefore, the issue of Qur’an’s translation for understanding and living by other nations has come to the fore from the earliest periods of Islam. In addition to this, there have been discussions about whether or not the Qur'anic translation can be called as the Qur'an and can or cannot be read in daily prayers. These discussions regarding to Turkish translations of the Qur’an have become clear in the Second Mashrutiyat Period that “the Nationalistic Ideas” began to appear and later in the early years of the Republic of Turkey. Especially when Eyüp Sabri Hayirlioglu was head of the Department of Religious Affairs between 1951-1960, it was a period when the discussions took the peak. In this respect, this article will examine the views of Hayirlioglu on translation of the Qur’an in the context of discussions during his presidency
