Evaluation of Antibiotic Use of Medical Students

Aim: Antibiotics are substances that kill microorganisms without harming humans or prevent the growth of microorganisms. In which patients these side effects may be more visible or the factors that may produce side effects should be determined in advance. The pharmacological properties of the antibiotic to be given to a patient for successful antibiotic treatment should be well known. Material and Methods: The study was a descriptive study conducted in Samsun Ondokuzmay？s University site on March-April 2018. The study was conducted with the aim of assessing the use of antibiotics by medical school students. The prepared questionnaire was applied at 640 medical school students who agreed to participate in the study with face-to-face interview technique. There were questions about the use of antibiotics in the questionnaire. Descriptive statistics were used in the evaluation of data. Results: The study group stated that 80.3% (n = 514) used antibiotics with a physician’s prescription and 26.2% (n = 168) used antibiotics for the period recommended by the physician. They stated that 14.5% (n = 93) of the participants used cigarettes and 17.5% (n = 112) had a chronic disease. 40.9% (n = 262) reported using antibiotics in the last 1 month. 51.5% (n = 330) of participants stated that they used other drugs together with antibiotics. Conclusion: As in the whole world, the use of wrong and unnecessary drugs in our country is a serious problem affecting public health. Immunity to antibiotics occurs when the medication no longer works against bacteria. In such conditions, treatment is difficult, the healing period is long, and you may need to apply for longer and more expensive treatments.
