Abstract:

In this study, the work entitled “Resimli, Yeni Musahabat-? Ahlak?ye ve Medeniye (Illustrated, New Moral and Civilization Speeches)” which is a course material directly related with citizenship and moral education in the first year of the Republic was examined. This work which was prepared to be read in the primary schools is also a book of morality and citizenship knowledge as preparation for civilization knowledge courses. Analyzing the content in the work, the values given in the primary schools during the first years of the Republic, the dimensions of citizenship and moral education were evaluated. In addition to this, what kind of features were emphasized in the thought of raising the citizen in the Republic was put forward. In the study, document review approach was used in the qualitative research methods, and the data were evaluated and interpreted by content analysis. According to the results obtained in the research, citizenship and moral values were included in the book as the categories of “individual development, social cohesion and religious belief”. Among these categories, 76.9% of the values related to individual development, 20.5% of the values in the social cohesion category and 2.6% in the religious belief category were included. Through the use of the sample events selected from daily life, it was seen as important for a child to have a relationship with his/her close circle. Accordingly, it was also seen as valuable that the messages given were not merely informative but were also practical for a child to be applied in life. In the book, “moral indulgence” approach was accepted as the basis. It was also important for a child to think about a subject on which he/she has any knowledge and to express his/her ideas about it. In addition to this, it was also important for a child to express himself/herself. For this purpose, the question-and-answer method was adopted as a teaching approach
