Examination of Nursing Students’ Social Media Addiction and Fear of Evading Developments

Abstract:

Introduction: There is a need for more studies to assess how mobile devices influence students in different professions, where technology has increasingly had a greater impact on society. Aim: The study was conducted to investigate the relationship between nursing students’ social media addiction status and fear of evading social media developments. Method: The population of the study consisted of students studying in a nursing department of a foundation university in Ankara (N=241). In this research, it is aimed to reach the nursing department students studying in the 2018-2019 academic year. The study sample comprised 216 students who agreed to participate in the research. The data were collected using Personal Information Form, Social Media Addiction Scale, Fear of Missing out Scale and Information Form. The data were analyzed in a computer program. Results: Social Media Addiction Scale means score of students was 95.14 ± 27.39, subscale scores were occupational 35.48 ± 10.22, mood regulation 13.69 ± 5.32, recurrence 10.50 ± 4.68, conflict 35.46 ± 12.64, respectively. Fear of Missing out Scale mean score of students was 27.61 ± 7.93. Social Media Addiction Scale was positively correlated with Fear of Missing out Scale. It was found statistically significant differences between the means of Social Media Addiction Scale and Fear of Missing out Scale in terms of daily social media usage period and the frequency of controlling the mobile phone. Conclusion: This study found that most of nursing students were social media addicted. It also determined that as the students’ social media addictions increased fear of missing outs increased
