Novel Binder-Free Three-Dimensional MoS2-Based Electrode for Efficient and Stable Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Abstract:

Exploring novel three-dimensional (3D) electrodes that are chemically stable and facile to use is of great significance for practical application of electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The great potential of MoS2/graphite hybrid rod as an excellent 3D electrode was revealed herein for the first time. The as-obtained electrodes exhibited excellent HER activity and stability, which was attributed to (1) the abundant active sites provided by MoS2 that were uniformly distributing both inside and on the surface of the graphite rod, (2) effective electron transport (with resistance as low as 1–5 Ω) offered by the strong binding of MoS2 to the graphitic base, and (3) robustness of the electrode ensured by the confinement effect of the rod’s inner space. This work not only provided a novel, simple, and inexpensive strategy for fabricating 3D electrodes but could also inspire future development on newly advanced electrode materials with a 3D structure
