“What do editors do”? It’s a popular question. A popular answer is that we’re scientific curators, selecting individual works and arranging them relative to each other such that the experience of appreciating each in context is richer than if they were isolated. Sometimes we are shepherds, securing safe passage of something precious and vulnerable through difficult terrain. We try to make scientists feel less alone
