Abstract:

Objective: to identify the most current scientific evidence related to the use of Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) in coping with Covid-19. Methods: integrative review of the literature. We used selection criteria and descriptors controlled from the PICO strategy for the search for articles indexed in the Medline/Pubmed and Lilacs databases, until April 16, 2020. Results: 22 articles were identified, nine of which comprised the final selection, five narrative reviews, two case series, one case report and one letter to the editor. Studies show that currently, there is no consistent evidence of the benefit of the use of ECMO in patients with Covid-19. Conclusion: there is a small scientific production on the subject, with studies with low level of evidence and absence of national publications, demonstrating the need to deepen the subject in Brazil through studies with a strong methodology for surveying evidence of the use of ECMO in coping with Covid-19.
