Abstract:

To date, the field of emotion regulation (ER) has largely focused on intrapersonal emotion regulation (regulate one’s own emotions) and has only recently started to investigate interpersonal emotion regulation (regulate another person’s emotions). This article selectively reviews current findings in order to answer the following questions: 1) What is interpersonal emotion regulation? 2) How can we best distinguish between individual emotion regulation and interpersonal emotion regulation? Although external emotion regulation and internal emotion regulation have a lot in common, they cannot be the same. 3) Measurement methods of interpersonal emotional regulation strategies. 4) Classification of interpersonal emotional regulation strategies.
