The Coastal Toponyms of the Island of ?oltaKeywords: onomastics, coastal toponyms, island of ?olta, etymology Abstract: Sa?etak The authors have listed and etymologically analyzed the coastal toponyms of the Dalmatian island of ?olta as the result of their field research, interviewing the local population and studying the old land registries and nautical charts. Besides the contrastive methods, the results have been analyzed and processed by descriptive methods. By detailed terrain observation, 291 toponyms have been gathered, among which the most numerous are the names of the bays. The research also includes the toponyms which have never been studied in the toponomastics of the Adriatic coast (i.e. S?skinja < lat. saxum – stone, Grm?j < lat. grumum – pile, R?dula < ven. rotola – species of seaurchin, Pol?brnjak < Cro. Rebro – rib, ?pir?n < ven. sperone – rostrum of the ship, Jorj? < Cro. orah – walnut, Obin?? < Cro. bjelu?ina – (inula verbasifolia), P?d Mastr?nke < Cro. mastrinka – the tree of wild olive, Pr?jci < Dalm. plagia – hillside on the coast < Gr. plágios – kos – sloping, Z? Zmaj?nac < Cro. zmajur – species of snake < PS *zmьjь, ?or??ne < Ital. Giorgio, D?nje V?ne < OS vinъnъ). For some names mentioned in the previous bibliography new etymological solution has been offered (i.e. Balk?n < Lat. balco – pile; ?ip?va < Lat. siphonata – draining, P?legrin < Lat. St. Pelegrinus). According to their origin, the toponyms have been classified into the Romance ones, which include the pre-Slavic and Dalmatoromance (i.e. Ka?j?n, Kom?n, Pi?k?ra, Stom?rska), Venetian and Italian toponyms (i.e. Ka??la/e, Lant?rna, ???ula, ?pir?n) and those Slavic formed in the period of the arrival of the first Croatian population to the island, as well as those more recent which are the result of the migrations of the new population (i.e. Dragobr??a, K?lebova St?na, Prip?li??e, Za???tak). The multi-word toponyms of the combined origin have also been studied (i.e. Gl?va S?skinje, K?zjak G?rma, ?ir?ka P?nta, Tov?rja ?k?na). In the semantic classification, the toponyms are grouped in 9 categories: the names formed according to the geographic terms (i.e. G?ka, J?ma, M?la L?da, Sp?le), their appearance and metaphors (i.e. B?skup R?t, G?rnja G?lica, L?vka, Mot?ka), according to the characteristics of soil (i.e. Gnjil?na, K?mik, M?la Stinj?va, Sav?ra), according to their features (i.e. Crv?ni R?d, Gr??avi Rat?c, Hr?pavica, P?d z? Pl??u), names of plants (i.e. Gr?bova G?rma, Korom??ina M?la i V?la, M?slinica, V?la Tr?vna), names of animals (i.e. K?lebova St?na, M?la Golub?nja G?rma, P?nta Gov?dica, Vránjac), activities (i.e. B?nje, Cet?nska Pas?ka, N? K?bel, Pi?k?ra), historically conditioned names
