GUTHRIE TEST: KNOWLEDGE OF PUERPERAS

Objective: to identify the knowledge of puerperas about the performance of Guthrie test. Method: descriptive study, of qualitative nature, carried out in the maternity sector of a philanthropic hospital, located in the city of Guarapuava, southern Brazil. Data were collected in July 2015, through recorded interviews, which were submitted to Minayo’s thematic analysis. Results: fifteen puerperas were interviewed. From the analysis of the statements, two categories were constituted: 1) Mothers’ knowledge regarding Guthrie Test and 2) Nursing care before Guthrie Test: reality versus ideology. Final Thoughts: it was possible to identify the superficial level of the puerperas’ knowledge about Guthrie test. These findings evidence the need for guiding the puerperas on the subject. The nurse is responsible for being committed to the care provided, providing the necessary knowledge and clarifying the pertinent doubts about Guthrie test.
