Translation of Public Signs from the Perspective of Eco-Translatology—Illustrated by the Example of Wuhan Public Service Places
Proper English public signs, as a crucial window of building international cities, play a significant role in cultural communication environment to provide clear guidelines for international friends. However, many English public signs in Wuhan are found in improper translation resulted from lacking of uniform standards, etc. Eco-translatology was first proposed by Hu Gengshen. As an original translation theory in China, eco-translatology theory combines translation and ecology from the perspective of ecological rationality to provide a corresponding translation paradigm for translation text research, translator identity research and external ecological research of translated text. The relationship between eco-translatololy and translation of public signs is expounded in this paper. Under the guidance of the eco-translatololy theory, authors analyze the type of problems in English public signs from three dimentions—language, culture and communication, and propose corresponding strategies for improvement. This paper aims to classify the errors in the English translation of public signs from the perspective of eco-translatology in a more detailed way, especially the reasons for the errors, and put forward corresponding countermeasures from the aspects of the professional quality of translators and the translational eco-environment.
