Modernization, Poverty Eradication, and the Process of Social Transformation in UgandaKeywords: Uganda, commercial farming, land grabbing, social transformation Abstract: To eradicate poverty, pro-market policies were implemented in Uganda. This article reveals that the policies did not improve the welfare of peasants. Instead, the peasants were made to depend on the market as a result of the harsh environment created that compelled them to increasingly abandon self-provisioning farming. Consequently, the people are increasingly faced with food shortages and the number of children dying of malnutrition is on the rise while land seizures are taking place.
