Placing the state within geofinance

In this commentary, I examine how research into global financial networks can be used to develop understandings of how place and space shape global finance. Drawing on the growing regulatory interest in geofinance, I argue that such a task presents considerable opportunities for financial geography in two main areas: first, in terms of diversifying our sources of empirics and theory to include those beyond the Global North; and second, in developing flatter ontologies of global finance that document how practices at the scale of financial centers and offshore jurisdictions shape relations of power and authority within global finance
