Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) occurs in up to 20% of adults exposed to a severe trauma. Adults diagnosed with PTSD are at high risk of developing a comorbid mental health or substance misuse disorder, suicide and psychosocial morbidity. For those diagnosed with PTSD, effective treatment is available. However, although the majority of adults with PTSD will have consulted their GP about a mental or emotional health problem in the last year only a minority of will have had their PTSD appropriately recognised or treated. It is important that GPs are aware of how to identify and treat adults with PTSD in primary care.
