The ESA Publishing Portfolio EvolvesDOI: https://doi.org/10.1002/bes2.1594 Abstract: Nearly a decade ago, the article “The Changing World of Publishing” in the ESA Bulletin (2011) provided an overview of the ESA portfolio of journals.11 https://esajournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1890/0012-9623-92.1.3. Since then, the journals have continued to evolve. Ecosphere, launched in 2010 as the ESA's first fully open‐access journal, now publishes more articles than any other ESA journal, nearly 500 per year. Its popularity as a fast‐publication open‐access option seems to have struck a chord with our authors. Our other peer‐reviewed journals, Ecology, Ecological Monographs, Ecological Applications, and Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment, have also changed with the times. These journals have seen new article types, new editors, refreshed interior and cover designs, and an enhanced online presence through our publisher Wiley. The Wiley publishing agreement took effect in January 2016 and dramatically increased the global reach of the ESA's journals. As of January 2018, we stopped printing physical copies of most of our journals, except for Frontiers, which is still mailed to all ESA members. Again, this is in keeping with the times, the evolving publishing landscape, and, of course, our ecological consciousness. Some of our readers may wonder why the ESA needs five peer‐reviewed journals, in addition to our quarterly news publication the Bulletin of the ESA. Here is a brief summary of the differences in mission and scope for each of our journals: Additional information about these publications’ aims and scope may be found at the journals’ websites. In addition to accepting original submissions from all sub‐fields of ecology, Ecosphere maintains a “cascade” role in the ESA journal portfolio. If an author submits a manuscript to another ESA journal and that paper contains high‐quality science but does not match the mission of the journal, we may suggest a transfer to Ecosphere. If you are offered this cascade option, we hope that you will consider it. Ecosphere has a policy of rapid review, and most articles are published within 30 days of acceptance. Keep in mind that all articles in Ecosphere are published under a CCBY license (i.e., the author retains copyright) and are open access. The other peer‐reviewed journals in the ESA portfolio, Frontiers, Ecology, Ecological Applications, and Ecological Monographs, now offer an open‐access publishing option. Authors of accepted papers can opt to publish their paper open access, for a fee, at the time files are transferred to the publisher. Otherwise, their paper will be published under
