Lakes as Islands: Editor's Note

In this edition of the Paper Trail, two researchers are connected by water, which is vast in many ways, thus making their overlapping interest in the rusty crayfish seem all the more improbable. For the established researcher, he came to see that lake islands are like any other, except that they are surrounded by land and not by water. He and a colleague chose to study rusty crayfish, as a component of aquatic ecology, and because of this, their work influenced the next generation. Thus, the connection was made to the arising researcher, who was searching for direction following his thesis work in freshwater ecology. Both have added significantly to our scientific understanding of rusty crayfish (an invasive species) abundance in lakes. In addition, they share a great concern for helping others in scholarly pursuits, which is also part of the reason for the Paper Trail
