Does India need more medical scientists?Abstract: Research in any field builds new knowledge, brings about improvements in existing practices and new advances. Biomedical research is critical for advancing the health of a nation. Sadly, in India, medical research is woefully neglected. A study analyzing research output from 579 Indian medical institutions and hospitals between 2005 and 2014 reported that only 25 (4.3%) of the institutions produced more than 100 papers a year compared to the annual research output of 4600 papers from the Massachusetts General Hospital and 3700 from the Mayo Clinic.[1
