Abstract:

The recent publication on Zika virus infection is very interesting. It is finally concluded that “clinicians should consider the diagnosis of Zika virus disease in febrile patients with recent travel to areas where Zika virus is currently circulating.1” There are some facts that should be discussed. First, the Zika virus infection is already the global issue. The infection is seen worldwide. Imported cases are seen in many nontropical countries. Of interest, the risk of local transmission in many nontropical countries is also mentioned.2 Hence, there is no doubt that the concern is needed by any practitioner. Another important point is afebrile and asymptomatic Zika virus infection.3 Many infected cases have mild symptoms and this can be easily missed. In addition, atypical clinical presentation is also possible and this makes it more difficult for practitioners to make an early diagnosis.3,4 It is advised that Zika virus should be included in the differential diagnosis of any patients with recent travel to areas where Zika virus is currently circulating regardless of the “clinical presentation of febrile illness.
