According to discussions on the early western translation thoughts, Augustine, the great theologist of ancient Rome was regarded as one of the supporters for “word for word” translation. However, such rigid assumption does not take the historical context and academic foundation of Augustine’s translation thoughts into consideration. Inspired by genetic translatology, this paper focuses on the historical and academic context of Augustine’s translation thoughts and attempts to shed some light on Augustine’s influence on the development of linguistics.
