Abstract:

Using masked priming paradigm and a lexical decision task, the present study examined ortho-graphic neighbor priming effect when Chinese-English bilinguals process L2 words. The results revealed L2 orthographic neighbor primes facilitated the recognition of the corresponding targets, which differed from inhibitory neighbor priming effect observed in L1 word recognition. In other words, lexical competition did not operate in L2 word recognition. It is posited that for unbalanced different-script bilinguals, L2 words were stored in episodic memory system where lexical recog-nition was not based on competition.
