Being a rare aesthetic-decadent poet in modern Chinese literature, Shao Xunmei was deeply in-fluenced by Oscar Wilde, the epitome of Aestheticism and Decadence in Britain. Shao imitated not only the aesthetic dandyism of Wilde in life style but also the aestheticism and decadence in Wilde’s Salomé in poem writing. However, in the context of domestic strife and foreign aggression during 1920-30s in China, it was difficult and impossible to convey the real nature of aesthetic modernity of Aestheticism and Decadence. The “modernity” Shao was trying to express in his poems was only imaginary, mimic and ambiguous.
