The system of Censure List is the most important weapon for AAUP to defend academic freedom in American higher education by publishing the black lists of those colleges and universities who violate the principles of AAUP about academic freedom and tenure. AAUP has enhanced its status and influence in American colleges and universities since 1930s by perfecting the system of censure list, standardizing the investigation procedures and evidences, collaborating with other professional organizations, widely publicizing the list and severely punishing those on the list. The system of censure list has played a very important role in protecting the principles of academic freedom and tenure and in promoting the development of academic profession in American colleges and universities.
