湖湘文化是一个由各种文化要素组合起来的整体结构，它本身又由诸多子系统构成，其中最重要的两个子系统是湖湘学术系统和湖湘人格系统。而湖湘文化发展史本来就是一个文化诠释和历史建构的过程，从湖湘文化的渊源、形成、发展的历史过程来看，湖湘文化处于一个不断被承传、更新、丰富、重组的建构过程。同样，现代学者研究湖湘文化也是关于湖湘文化的历史建构。
Huxiang culture is an integrity made up of various culture elements, and its history itself is a process of cultural interpretation and historic construction. Therefore, it has always been the focus of modern scholars working on Huxiang culture. The modern scholar's did realize extensive research and comprehensive analysis in a way of "general theory", which was also an interpretation and construction activity about the knowledge and meaning of Huxiang culture.
