|
Abstract:
ABSTRACT: Objective To explore the expression of CX43 protein in endometrial polyps (EP). Methods We randomly selected 79 paraffin specimens of EP diagnosed at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the Second Affiliated Hospital, Xi’an Jiaotong University, from January 2011 to May 2013 after dilation and curettage of endometrial tissues by histopathological examination. They included 44 cases of EP tissues (18 cases in proliferational phase, 15 cases in secretory phase, and 11 cases in postmenopausal phase) and 35 cases of normal endometrial tissues as the control group (12 cases in proliferational phase, 12 cases in secretory phase, and 11 cases in postmenopausal phase). CX43 protein expression was analyzed in premenopausal and postmenopausal EP by immunohistochemical staining. Results The positive expression of CX43 protein in both control group and EP tissues was found in endometrial glandular epithelial cells and stroma cells surrounding the glands, principally in glandular epithelial cells. The positive rate of CX43 protein in the EP significantly decreased compared with control group in corresponding phase (P<0.05). The positive rate of CX43 protein in the proliferational and secretory stages was similar, but it decreased in postmenopausal stage compared to premenopausal phase of EP, but without significant difference (P>0.05). The positive expression of CX43 protein in EP had no correlation with hypertension and the number of polyps. Conclusion CX43 protein expression in endometrial polyps is reduced, which may play an important role in the development of EP
