Abstract:

To clarify the source of volatiles used by parasitoid Peristenus spretus Chen et van Achterberg (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) to locate the nymphs of green mirid bug Apolygus lucorum (MeyerDür) (Hemiptera: Miridae), behavioral selection of P. spretus to A. lucorum nymphs and its damaged cotton plants, vegetative and flowering cotton and castor bean plants were measured by using Y-tube olfactometer in this study. The results showed that the 3rd instar A. lucorum nymphs, and healthy cotton plants had no significant attraction to female P. spretus. Female wasps were significantly attracted to damaged cotton plants (both with and without mirid nymphs), but no difference was found between these two treatments. However, male P. spretus showed no markedly preference to any above mentioned treatments. In addition, compared with healthy and damaged but with nymphs removed vegetative cotton plants, female A. lucorum adults were significantly attracted to flowering castor bean plants in the same treatment, whereas female wasps only preferred damaged flowering castor bean plants but not healthy ones. Furthermore, female P. spretus preferred damaged flowering cotton and castor bean plants (with mirid nymphs removed) to the corresponding vegetative host plants. The results indicated that female P. spretus mainly utilizes the volatiles from host plants damaged by A. lucorum, and the behavioral selection of female P. spretus to flowering host plants was consistent with that of A. lucorum.
