Master Tai Hsu’s Solo Adventure: Social Theory From the perspective of Buddhism

太虚大师（1890-1947）是集中国佛学思想之大成者、近代佛教革命与革新的实践者、以佛法导引现代人心的“人间佛教”的倡导者、立足中国佛教走向“世界时代”的文化交流使者，本文的关注点是太虚大师相关作品中的社会学指向，通过将太虚大师置于风云激荡的近代中国思想史、逐步扎根中国的社会学传播史之中，分析其立足中国、立足佛教与佛学，融合中西传统、创建现代中国及其新学术脉络的努力，揭示其复兴传统、创新学术的意义，尤其是思想中某种佛教社会理论的线索。
：Master Tai Hsu (1890-1947), an eminent monk in modern China, is well-known for his passionate appealing for Buddhist revolution and “Humanistic Buddhism”. Nurtured by traditional Chinese culture and Buddhist intelligence, he also keeps an eye on the in-coming western social sciences, such as psychology and sociology. Historical document shows that he knows the new currents of European sociology of his time and has his own understanding. This study is focusing on the sociological dimension of his voluminous works. By combing through his ideas of a multi-layered society, an engaging Buddhism caring for reality, a work ethic and a revived ‘modern China’ , the paper tries to show the potential for further sociological study, which indicates Master Tai Hsu as a pioneer of sociological theorist from the perspective of Buddhism
